How can the therapist use open, moment-to-moment, non-judgmental awareness to facilitate integration in the emotionally deregulated client with dissociation as a primary defense mechanism?

In this experiential workshop I will focus on the use and therapeutic effect of an open, moment-to-moment, non-judgmental awareness.  By paying attention to inner sensations as well as outer signals in an open-hearted way, the therapist will be better able to facilitate a contact between the client’s perception of self and the intensity of the dissociated emotions.  In other words, the success of the treatment relies on the therapist’s ability to remain in the open awareness while containing the client’s fragile presenting personality as well as the unmanageable and dissociated emotions. This implies being intensely aware of the client’s feelings as they resonate in the therapist, the therapist’s own responses to the client’s feelings and the therapist’s own emotional history.

In this context of attunement, it is possible over time for the client to integrate the dissociated, emotionally unstable parts of his or her personality and thereby develop the capacity for emotional self-regulation.

The workshop will attempt to look at the different ways we can strengthen and develop the

therapist`s ability to remain open and aware in the midst of intense emotional states - those of the client and of the therapist.

The form of the workshop will be designed to bring this process alive in the context of the group.
